We live in a world that is dominated by science and empirical analysis. What we see is real, what we don’t see is not real. However, this whole ceremony has very much been about the unseen, about the mind. And now, even science and modern culture are beginning to recognise that the universe is multi layered. This truth has been understood and experienced throughout the Buddhist tradition and in many other wisdom cultures. What is important is the cultivation of the mind and heart.

Many people think that meditation requires a lot of effort and it’s something you have to gain. We plug into this idea that somehow it’s something we have to force ourselves to do and at the end of it we will succeed or fail. And I think it’s very important to realise it’s nothing to do with that at all. That’s just the ego wanting to be a meditator.

The whole secret of meditation is to learn just how to be present in the moment and in a state of complete openness and relaxation. It’s not a matter of gaining, it’s a matter of losing, of dropping — letting go, letting go, letting go. I think it’s really very important, especially in this age where we’re all programmed to want to get something that it’s not a matter of what you get, it’s a matter of what you lose.

Lunar and Losar New Year Pujas.

Attended 3 Pujas in 1 night at Gaden Shartse Drophen Ling: Heart Sutra Obstacle Clearing Puja, Namthoese Wealth Gathering and Protector Setrap Puja. The whole event ended almost 2am this morning.

After the first and second puja concluded, it was the first day of the new year. Lion and Dragon dance ushered in the new year with lots of drums and cymbals to add to the festivity mood. Sun Wukong (Monkey God) appeared among the crowd to add some fun and laughter to the joyous occasion.

We all got blessings with blessed rice showered upon us and the new clothes that we brought along to be blessed. All of us were queueing to make offerings to Daygab Rinpoche and the other Venerables after the whole puja concluded and to be blessed by them. It was a wonderful way to start the new year with so many brothers and sisters that tread the same path.

Be present with the things that are already present. Your body, your breath, the tingling inside your hands, the sense of sound, the sense of sight when you simply experience and not divide or label, a plant, a flower, the sky… these are utterly present. Awareness does not need the seer or the seen; it is just pure seeing. If you don’t get this, start with Observing Thought.

Tibetan New Year’s Message from His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Conventional truth is the method; and the ultimate is its outcome. Not knowing how the two truths differ, your thoughts will go astray.
