An ordinary person cannot establish the inferential nature of scriptural testimony except by relying upon the authoritativeness of scripture, because he or she has heard both the great benefits of virtuous actions and the grave consequences of having to be reborn in the lower states that come from pursuing or avoiding certain kinds of actions whose results lie beyond ordinary perception, and because he or she does not see anything that contradicts the possibility that these results will indeed occur. Thus, the determination that it would be referable, in the face of such a recommended course of action, to proceed accordingly is said to be one whose validity derives from having undertaken a proper investigation.
